OUR IMPACT

Farm School NYC engages in intentional strategic efforts to address inequity within urban agriculture in NYC.

We focus on culturally relevant educational programming, support of historically under-resourced communities, and building community amongst urban growers to enact local change.

Annual Report 2024

PROBLEM

Community Garden Access

With over 550 community gardens in New York City, the distribution of the gardens throughout the five boroughs are fewer in communities with predominantly people of color.

SOLUTION

Citywide Site Visits

FSNYC has over 32 partnerships to urban growing spaces across the five boroughs of New York City.

Our students gain relationships to a range of sites and land stewards, grassroots movements, organizations, and regenerative agriculture practices.

PROBLEM

Food Deserts and Health Outcomes

*Black and Latine neighborhoods are more likely to be food insecure, lack access to urban farms and fresh produce, and experience higher rates of diabetes and hypertension. (Department of Health)

SOLUTION

Food Justice and Food Sovereignty

Our educational programs are rooted in the popular education model and food justice principles. We cultivate space for everyone’s knowledge and experiences in order to build with each other and move towards food sovereignty as a community.

PROBLEM

Barriers to Land Ownership

*Black and Latine farmers own significantly less land compared to white farmers, limiting their ability to engage in urban agriculture.

SOLUTION

Urban to Rural Continuum

FSNYC’s alumni and founders have created 25+ projects across New York State ranging from cooperative farms to toolkits for urban growers.

We strive to connect students in urban agriculture to rural growing spaces that support who they are, entirely.

PROBLEM

Engagement & Representation

For many years on the east coast, there were no urban farming programs. The few programs that existed often lacked culturally relevant material, representation of diverse growers, and growing practices grounded in traditional knowledge.

Other obstacles included socioeconomic barriers, lack of outreach, and discrimination in learning spaces.

SOLUTION

Engagement & Representation

In 10+ years, Farm School NYC has reached 3,000 New Yorkers through grassroots educational programs, outreach, and events.

Our facilitators are farmers and land stewards who incorporate theory and technique that engages and represents our diverse participants.
