Crop Management - Summer 2015

June 24 - July 25, 2015
Wednesdays, 6 -9 pm
Saturdays, 10 - 2 pm

This course will explore the best crops for NYC’s climate, weed management, succession planning and planting, inter-planting, harvesting and post-harvest handling techniques, review of common crop plant families and their specific needs including vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit, and summer pruning.

This session will be taught by co-teachers Chris Bolden Newsome,  Farm Manager at Bartram’s Community Farm and Food Resource Center in Philadelphia, and Lise Lorimer, the Farm Manager at The Farm at Queens Botanical Garden.

Other Summer Season Courses

Plant Health: This course is an introduction to organic pest and disease management.  We will begin to identify common NYC pests and diseases and discuss prevention and management strategies, including cultural practices, mechanical and biological controls and low-toxic treatment.

Fall Season

Season Extension: Learn about the best crops for late-season production. Students will also learn about common season-extension tools: row covers, sun boxes, cold frames, greenhouses and hoop houses. We will cover the benefits and challenges of using these materials, and sources for them.
August 12 - 22, 2015
Wednesdays, 6 -9 pm
Saturdays, 10 - 2 pm

Preparing for Winter: This course will cover seed saving, garlic planting and varieties, garden clean-up and tool storage, cover-cropping basics (varieties, sowing methods and planting calendar) as well as food preservation techniques.

September 2 - 19, 2015
Wednesdays, 6 -9 pm
Saturdays, 10 - 2 pm

Small Farm Planning and Design: This course will review the value of and types of record keeping for your community garden, urban farm, or food-related business. Learn practical elements of community garden, school garden and urban farm design, business planning 101, beginner marketing concepts and program planning. Learn about the theory and practice of asset-based community mapping.  There are several pre-requisites for this course.  Please contact us for more information.
